2012
National Conference
May 17, 2012
Georgetown University Law Center Washington, DC
Held on the anniversary of Brown v. Board, NCSD's second national conference focused on the coalition's efforts to secure a more significant commitment to integration in U.S. Department of Education programs, including magnet schools, turnaround schools, charter schools, interdistrict transfers under NCLB, and in “Race to the Top” and other federal school reform programs.

During "Advancing the Legacy of Mendez and Brown," we heard from several agency officials from the Department of Education as well as staff from the DOJ's Civil Rights Division. We were honored to welcome Sylvia Mendez (Plaintiff in California's landmark 1946 Mendez v. Westminster desegregation case) as a guest speaker. At this conference, NCSD really began to dig into the complexities of school integration, with sessions like It’s Complicated: Untangling the Discourse about Neighborhood Schools and Diversity; Beyond Black and White: Advocating for Integration in Latino and Asian American Communities; and Truth, Reconciliation, and Healing: Acknowledging Experiences with Court-Ordered Desegregation. We heard directly from several school superintendents in the midst of navigating demographic change and integration: Demond Means (Wisconsin), Melissa Krull (Minnesota), and Del Burns (North Carolina). We also held our first in-person meeting of the Research Advisory Panel the day following the conference.
